Addis Ababa residents are advised to plan their commutes carefully this Sunday, May 3, 2026, as several key roads will be temporarily closed to facilitate the International Zayed Charity 5K Street Run. The Addis Ababa Police Commission has issued a public advisory detailing the affected routes and timings, urging motorists and pedestrians to cooperate with traffic regulations.
The prestigious Zayed Charity Run, an international event that has previously graced cities like Dubai, New York, Beijing, and Nairobi, is set to make its mark in the Ethiopian capital. The 5-kilometer street race will commence and conclude at the iconic Meskel Square, drawing participants from various walks of life to support a noble cause.
The race route will begin at Meskel Square, proceed towards Legahar traffic light, pass the National Theatre traffic light, and turn around at the former EBC traffic light. Runners will then make their way back through Senga Tera traffic light, Mexico Square, and Buna na Shay Legahar, before finishing at Meskel Square.
To ensure the safety of participants and smooth execution of the event, specific roads will be closed to vehicular traffic starting early Sunday morning until the race concludes. The Addis Ababa Police have outlined the following closures:
* From St. Urael Church towards Meskel Square (at Bambis or Mekrez Hospital intersection). * From Olympia Square towards Meskel Square (at Olympia Square). * From Tilahun Square towards Meskel Square (at Tilahun Square). * From Legahar traffic light towards Meskel Square (at Legahar traffic light). * From Legahar Tele intersection towards Stadium (at Legahar Tele intersection). * From Harambe traffic light towards Meskel Square (at Harambe traffic light). * From the National Palace towards Meskel Square (at the National Palace intersection).
These closures will be enforced from 6:00 AM on Sunday, May 3, 2026, and will remain in effect until the completion of the running program. Furthermore, motorists are strictly prohibited from parking vehicles, whether for short or extended periods, along the designated race routes starting from 6:00 PM on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
The Addis Ababa Police emphasize the importance of public awareness and cooperation to minimize inconvenience and ensure a successful and safe event for all. Residents are encouraged to use alternative routes and consider public transport or walking where feasible during the closure period.
