Addis Ababa Launches Major Urban Renewal in Mercato's Kitel Tera

Latest News

Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie has launched a significant urban renewal project in the bustling Mercato district, specifically targeting the area locally known as "Kitel Tera." The initiative aims to transform the congested locality into a modern residential hub, promising improved living conditions and enhanced safety for its residents.

Mayor Adanech highlighted the critical need for such a development, citing the current area's severe congestion and unsuitability, which has historically posed significant challenges, particularly during emergencies like fires. She recalled a past major fire incident where the lack of proper vehicle access severely hampered firefighting efforts, underscoring the inherent dangers faced by the community.

The ambitious project will see the construction of a new residential village spanning 10,000 square meters. This development will feature nine eight-story buildings, collectively providing over 500 modern homes. Beyond housing, the plan includes essential infrastructure such as recreational facilities for children and youth, aiming to create a comfortable and vibrant living environment that will fundamentally alter the area's landscape.

A cornerstone of the project is the commitment to rehouse the current residents of Kitel Tera within the new development. Mayor Adanech explicitly stated, "We will accommodate the community in this area right here." She assured residents that those displaced by the construction would be given priority for the new homes, emphasizing the administration's dedication to ensuring a smooth transition. "We will strive to enable you, who have been displaced from here, to move into your homes even before the full completion," she pledged, highlighting the focus on minimizing disruption for affected families.

Recognizing the commercial vibrancy of Mercato, the project also incorporates economic opportunities. Mayor Adanech announced that buildings along the main roads would include commercial spaces, with additional dedicated commercial structures planned. She expressed optimism that the transformed area would "become a blessing and prosperity for many."

The Mayor underscored her administration's meticulous planning and commitment to delivering on its promises. "We don't make promises we haven't thoroughly thought about and prepared for; we promise you after preparation," she affirmed, aiming to build trust with the community. She projected the completion of the housing units by the upcoming Ethiopian New Year (September), envisioning a profound change. "The New Year will bring a new spirit, a new way of life, a modern way of life, a comfortable village for children, youth, and the elderly in this area," Mayor Adanech declared, painting a picture of a revitalized community.

This urban renewal project represents a significant step towards addressing housing shortages and improving living standards in one of Addis Ababa's most iconic yet challenging districts. It reflects the city administration's broader vision for sustainable urban development and community well-being.
