Addis Ababa Light Rail Collision Leaves Two Injured

The Addis Ababa Police Commission has reported a traffic accident involving a light rail vehicle and a heavy-duty truck near the Saint Selite Mihret Church area. The incident occurred on the afternoon of April 1, 2026, at approximately 11:55 AM local time in the Yeka Sub-city, Wereda 9.

According to official police statements, the collision involved a Sinotruk vehicle owned by the Ethio-Djibouti Railway Share Company, which was traveling from Lamberet toward Jakros. The truck collided with a light rail vehicle operated by the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit Service, which was en route from Ayat to Megenagna.

Authorities confirmed that two passengers aboard the light rail train sustained minor injuries as a result of the impact. Emergency responders and police were dispatched to the scene immediately following the report.

Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. Efforts are also underway to clear the heavy cargo from the Sinotruk vehicle to restore normal traffic flow in the area. The Addis Ababa Light Rail system remains a critical component of the city's public transportation infrastructure, and authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution near rail crossings to prevent similar incidents.
