Latest News

An international conference focused on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in driving sustainable development across the African continent has officially commenced today, Monday, April 27, 2026, in the city of Mekelle, Ethiopia.

Under the theme "Artificial Intelligence for Africa's Sustainable Development," the event brought together a diverse group of scholars, researchers, and tech experts from Ethiopia, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States. The conference is being held in a hybrid format, with participants attending both in person and virtually.

During the opening ceremony, Dr. Abdelkadir Kedir, Vice President of Mekelle University, emphasized that AI is no longer a luxury but an essential engine for national and continental growth. "We are at a stage where it is impossible to imagine the growth of our country or Africa without the support of AI," Dr. Abdelkadir stated. He added that embracing the rapid pace of technological advancement is a necessity for the continent to remain competitive and self-sufficient.

The two-day summit is designed to explore the practical applications of AI across several critical sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, finance, and peace-building. By integrating smart technologies into these fields, experts hope to find innovative solutions to long-standing developmental challenges in the region.

Organizers have confirmed that the conference will feature the presentation of 12 major research papers and 32 scientific studies. These presentations are expected to provide a roadmap for how African nations can leverage data-driven technologies to improve food security, enhance medical diagnostics, and modernize financial systems.

Mekelle University, one of Ethiopia's leading academic institutions, continues to position itself as a hub for technological discourse, fostering international partnerships to bridge the digital divide in East Africa.
