ADDIS ABABA – In a significant move for the continent’s technological landscape, the Assembly of the African Union (AU) has officially designated Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as the AU Champion for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Health. The appointment recognizes Ethiopia's rapid strides in digital infrastructure and its emerging role as a hub for technological innovation in Africa.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced the appointment, highlighting that the role was conferred in recognition of Dr. Abiy’s leadership in the sector. According to the PMO, the AU’s decision underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding AI applications and fostering a culture of innovation that transcends national borders.
In an official letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the African Union praised his vision for digital transformation. "Your leadership in promoting digital transformation and new technologies has been instrumental in positioning AI as a key tool for Africa’s sovereignty, efficiency, and inclusive growth," the letter stated. It further noted that Ethiopia’s strategic focus on building technological capacity would contribute significantly to the continent’s global standing in the responsible and equitable use of AI.
Over the past several years, Ethiopia has prioritized the digital economy as a pillar of its national growth strategy. Key milestones cited by the PMO include the expansion of digital infrastructure, the implementation of comprehensive e-government services, and significant investments in the local innovation ecosystem. A cornerstone of this progress was the establishment of the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute (EAII), which has been tasked with developing AI-driven solutions for sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and finance. Furthermore, the government has drafted a national AI strategy to guide the ethical and productive integration of these technologies into the public and private sectors.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister’s Office revealed plans for the establishment of a dedicated Artificial Intelligence University. This institution is expected to serve as a regional center for research, skill development, and continental collaboration, further cementing Ethiopia’s role in the AU’s digital agenda. As the newly appointed Champion, Prime Minister Abiy is expected to advocate for policy harmonization and increased investment in AI and digital health initiatives across AU member states, aligning with the broader Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa.
