Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has officially announced the completion of the Asella Wind Power Project, a major infrastructure milestone that adds 100 megawatts of clean energy to Ethiopia's national power grid. The announcement underscores the nation's strategic shift toward diversifying its energy portfolio and harnessing its vast renewable resources.
In a statement regarding the project's realization, Prime Minister Abiy emphasized Ethiopia's growing technical expertise in the sector. "Ethiopia knows how to use the wind and convert it into power," the Prime Minister stated. He pointed to the success of previous installations, such as the Adama, Ashegoda, and Ayisha wind farms, as living proof of the country's capability to execute large-scale renewable energy projects.
The Asella Wind Farm, located in the Arsi Zone of the Oromia Region, is part of a broader national initiative to ensure energy security and support industrial growth. By integrating wind power, Ethiopia aims to mitigate the risks associated with over-reliance on hydroelectric power, which can be vulnerable to seasonal rainfall fluctuations and climate change.
