The Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics has announced the completion of preparations for a nationwide rollout of a new, standardized vehicle license plate system. This initiative marks a significant update to the country's vehicle identification infrastructure.
As part of the transition process, the Ministry has introduced a unique opportunity for individuals and organizations to secure specific, preferred license plate numbers through a competitive bidding process. This pre-issuance phase allows interested parties to select and bid on desired registration numbers before the general distribution begins.
To participate in this selection process, applicants are required to visit the Ministry of Transport and Logistics headquarters, specifically the 5th floor, to register their interest. The registration window is open for one week, starting from March 25, 2026 (17/07/18 E.C.).
This move is part of a broader effort by the government to modernize transport administration and improve vehicle tracking and management across the country. The Ministry has emphasized that this standardized system will bring consistency to vehicle identification nationwide. Further details regarding the full implementation timeline and the technical specifications of the new plates are expected to be released by the Ministry in the coming weeks.
