The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has officially announced that the window for voter registration is rapidly closing. With the deadline set for April 14 (Miazia 14), the board is calling on all eligible citizens who have not yet registered to do so immediately to ensure their right to vote in the upcoming elections.
In a significant move toward modernizing the country’s democratic infrastructure, NEBE has introduced the 'Mirchaye' digital platform. This multi-channel system allows citizens to register via a dedicated web portal or through mobile applications available on both Android and iOS devices. The digital option is designed to provide a convenient alternative for those with internet access, streamlining the process and reducing queues at physical locations.
Despite the push for digital adoption, the Election Board emphasized that traditional in-person registration remains a core component of the process. Citizens can still visit their local polling stations to register manually. The board has encouraged the public to follow their official social media pages for a comprehensive list of special stations where digital registration assistance is also being provided.
The NEBE’s message, 'Join the decision-makers,' underscores the critical role of voter participation in shaping the nation's future. Voter registration is the foundational step in the electoral process, determining the eligibility of the electorate and the integrity of the final vote count.
The National Election Board of Ethiopia is the independent federal body responsible for organizing and conducting national and regional elections. In recent years, the board has focused on enhancing transparency and efficiency through technological integration. The launch of the 'Mirchaye' app represents a milestone in these efforts, aiming to engage a younger, tech-savvy demographic while maintaining accessibility for all segments of the population.
As the April 14 deadline approaches, the board urges all stakeholders, including civil society organizations and community leaders, to spread awareness about the remaining registration days. Eligible voters are reminded that registration is a prerequisite for casting a ballot, and no extensions have currently been announced.
