Professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot Slams TPLF Decisions, Warns of Threats to Pretoria Peace Deal

Latest News

Professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot, a prominent political figure and leader within the Simret Party, has issued a scathing critique of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) Central Committee following its latest resolutions. In a strongly worded statement, the Professor warned that the current trajectory of certain political factions within the region poses a direct threat to the fragile peace established over the last year and a half.

Kindeya characterized a specific faction within the TPLF as a "criminal group," asserting that their recent moves are designed to dismantle the existing regional administration. According to the Professor, the group is attempting to restore the 2020 regional council—a body formed during the controversial regional elections that preceded the devastating two-year civil war. He further alleged that this group is seeking to strengthen "illegal relations" with neighboring countries, a move he claims bypasses federal authority and established diplomatic protocols.

Central to Kindeya’s argument is the assertion that these actions directly contravene the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) signed in Pretoria in November 2022. The Pretoria Agreement was the landmark deal that ended the active conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and the TPLF, leading to the establishment of the Interim Regional Administration (IRA) of Tigray. Kindeya argues that attempting to revert to pre-war governance structures effectively nullifies the terms of the peace deal and risks plunging the region back into instability.

"As long as these war-mongers are allowed to decide our fate, there will be no peace," Kindeya stated, emphasizing the need for accountability. He called upon all peace-loving citizens and stakeholders to condemn these movements, which he believes are designed to serve the interests of a few rather than the people of Tigray who are still recovering from the scars of war.

This friction highlights the deepening internal divisions within Tigray's political landscape. Since the signing of the Pretoria Agreement, tensions have simmered between various factions of the TPLF leadership and the Interim Regional Administration led by Getachew Reda. The Professor’s comments underscore the high stakes involved in the region's transition and the ongoing struggle to maintain the delicate balance of the peace process.
