Lt. General Tadesse Worede, the President of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration (IRA), has issued a stern warning against political maneuvers that threaten the region's stability. During a press conference held this afternoon, the General addressed recent decisions made by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) that challenge the current administrative structure.
The tension stems from a recent TPLF meeting in Aksum, where the party reportedly decided to reinstate the government elected in 2013 E.C. (2020 G.C.). This move is seen as a direct challenge to the Interim Administration, which was established following the Pretoria Peace Agreement that ended the devastating two-year conflict in Northern Ethiopia.
"Movements that make it appear as if there is no government must stop," Lt. General Tadesse stated during the briefing. He emphasized that the TPLF leadership must carefully weigh its decisions, warning that political posturing should not pave the way for another round of war. The General's remarks highlight a growing rift within the Tigrayan political landscape, specifically between the party's veteran leadership and the interim officials tasked with managing the region's transition.
The 2020 regional elections were a primary catalyst for the original conflict between the federal government and Tigrayan forces, as the federal authorities deemed the polls illegal. By attempting to revert to that mandate, the TPLF risks complicating the delicate peace process and the ongoing implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA).
Lt. General Tadesse Worede, who also serves as a key military figure in the region, stressed that the priority must remain on the recovery of the Tigrayan people and the maintenance of peace. He urged all political actors to act with responsibility to ensure that the region does not slide back into instability. The Interim Administration continues to face significant challenges, including the displacement of millions and the need for massive reconstruction efforts across the region.
